13 February 2014
1:15-2:15 p.m.
Havener Auditorium

Abstract:

In this seminar, I will share the experiences I gained in my 38-year journey at IRRI as a researcher working on social issues in rice-based farming systems—from being a research assistant with the Social Sciences Research team at the Multiple Cropping Division in 1975, to leaving IRRI in 2013 as a senior scientist and the deputy division head of the Social Sciences Division. I will present key findings of the strategic research on gender issues in rice-based production systems, our experiences in mainstreaming gender across IRRI research programs in collaboration with NARES partners, and capacity enhancement efforts, including a leadership course for Asian and African women in research, development, and extension. I will also present the lessons learned and future challenges in addressing gender issues in agriculture within the CGIAR, in IRRI, and in Asia.
